Career History
 2009 – Present

University Of Cambridge

Research Associate (RA) at the University of Cambridge and a member of the EPSRC WILDSENSING project. Working on the research, design and deployment of Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks for environmental sensing and species monitoring in conjunction with Oxford University Computing Laboratory and Wildlife Conservation Research Unit.

Research Vision: In the future we will have extensive access to a wealth of information from all kinds of objects and sensors bringing convenience to all aspects of everyday life. By providing realtime information to our mobile devices and finger tips we can achieve a greater array of services far beyond anything envisaged to date.

University of Cambridge: Is the fourth oldest university in the world. The University of Cambridge is one of the world's leading research universities and in 2009 proudly celebrates its 800th anniversary.

Collaborators and Sponsors:

  2006 – 2007

Microsoft Research, Inc.

Joined the Computer-Mediated Living group at MSR Cambridge, where I had the opportunity to apply my research expertise in the field of mobile and pervasive computing across a number of challenging disciplines, breaking down communication barriers and enriching collaborative interactions.

Research projects include: Mobile collaboration, mobile social media sharing, content distribution, networking, sensors, mobile broadcast television and user experiance design.

Microsoft Research: Provides many of the brains behind the brawn of the world's leading software provider. The Cambridge facility is one of the largest computer science research laboratories in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) with over 100 leading researchers from all around the world.

  2004 – 2005

Daegu , South Korea.

Prior to commencing my doctorate of philosophy degree.  I took up the opportunity to travel, work and see the world! Got to spend a year living in South Korea (internet and mobile tech capital of the world), experiencing the culture, visiting neighbouring countries and gaining valuable knowledge of this fast developing region.

South Korea: Officially the Republic of Korea (ROK) and often referred to as Korea is a presidential republic in East Asia, occupying the southern half of the Korean Peninsula. Also known as the "Land of the Morning Calm", it is neighbored by China to the west and Japan to the east.

Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Based at their headquarters in Menlo Park, California (the heart of Silicon Valley). I was part of a technology evangelist team, tasked with applying research methodologies to real world scenarios 'applied research', pushing technologies to their limits and showcasing their fullest potential in creating compelling future solutions that provide measurable ROI's.

Research projects include: Distributed data processing, knowledge management, web services, proactive self healing initiatives, early utility computing prototypes and augmented reality solutions.

Sun Microsystems: Is a global company, known for its market leadership in high end computing infrastructures that power leading global businesses, the internet and for the creation of the Java programming language deployed on over 90 percent of all computers and mobile phones worldwide.

  2000 – 2002

Carbon Digital, Ltd.

Worked as a senior consultant dealing with the technical aspects of developing reliable web based solutions and the associated data management strategies. During my time at the company I helped propel various companies to the forefront of technology innovation, providing expert analysis and solution advice to many major clients and early adopters, looking to better understand, adapt and benefit from the rapidly changing technology market place.

I benefitted tremendously from great job opportunities provided by early internet start-ups during this time. Experiencing many challenging projects at a young age, learning many new skills (technical, social and business) and striving to improve web interactions.

Employment: Buizz Build, Cheshire Council, Enzyme, Fielden-Cegos, New Mind, Value Direct and Zzap.

Education
  2005 – 2008

University of Bath PhD.

PhD in Human computer interaction (HCI) and Mobile Collaborative Environments (MCEs) at Bath University, under the supervision of Dr. Eamonn O'Neill.  Research draws on the development of theoretical grounding and empirical investigations to design tools and techniques to support effective collaboration across mobile cellular devices with limited resources and technological constraints. Related research interests include distributed computing, pervasive technologies and user experience (UX) design.

Awarded: EPSRC studentship to study for a PhD at the University of Bath, ranked 5th in the UK (2004).

Accolade: Vodafone Research 1st prize, for outstanding applied research in the field of Mobile Social Networking and Communication.

Appeared on a special episode of Beyond Tomorrow with Anna Choy from The Discovery Channel to talk about technologies that will simplify the way we organise, manage and retrieve our digital memories in generations to come.
Publications: A list of my most recent publications and ongoing work is available in the research section. I have also acted as a reviewer for the international ACM-SIG Computer Human Interaction (CHI) and Australian (OZCHI) conferences in addition to the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies (IJHCS) from 2007-2009 and taught graduate level Mobile user experience design courses at the University of Bath.

  2000 – 2004

University of Kent at Canterbury BSc.

BSc (hons) Computer Science. Final year research/ development work was in the highly challenging field of Augmented Reality and real time image analysis, sponsored by Sun Microsystems educational research labs in Colorado, U.S.A.
